Dr. Bayer’s research is mainly applied in nature. The major activity is centered around fabrication and characterization of functional polymer nanocomposites. The Smart Materials Platform@IIT has a number of research activities on fabrication and characterization of electrically and magnetically functional polymer nanocomposites, preparation and characterization of biomaterial nanocomposites for antimicrobial applications and drug delivery, processing of novel cellulosic materials, new generation polymer blends and surface modification and functionalization. Dr. Bayer participates in these research activities by supervising or helping supervise a number of graduate students and post doctoral colleagues. Moreover, Dr. Bayer has ongoing collaborations with the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago and with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Virginia.

Thomas Sanderson obtained his PhD at the age of 27 from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and did postdoctoral studies at Michigan State University, USA. He is an associate professor at the INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier, Laval (Québec), Canada and has published more than 70 papers in reputed journals. His toxicology laboratory is focused on studying interactions of chemicals with steroidogenic enzymes in humans and wildlife and is currently funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council (NSERC) of Canada and the Alternatives Research and Development Foundation (USA). Thomas is editorial board member of Toxicological Sciences and PeerJ.

Member of the American Academy of Dermatology, DASIL, IACD, Brazilian Society of Dermatology, Brazilian Society of Dermatologic Surgeons has published papers in reputed journals and has been serving as an editorial board member of repute besides being author of several book chapters and editor of cosmetic dermatology books.

The aim and focus of my research for many years has been to develop more effective and selective therapies for cancer patients based on data generated in preclinical models, and translated from bench to bed side and vice versa. In the 1990s, my laboratory, in collaboration with clinical colleagues at RPCI, developed the weekly schedule of 5-fluorouracil in combination with leucovorin as standard therapy for the treatment of colorectal cancer. In recent years, this laboratory was the first to demonstrate that therapeutic doses and schedule of methylselenocysteine, and seleno-L-methionine are potent inhibitors of hypoxia-induced and constitutively expressed HIF-1α and HIF-2α and associated specific types of miRNAs and VEGF expressed in tumor cells. Pronounced and sustained inhibition of these specific biomarkers was associated with therapeutic synergy with anticancer drugs. On the basis of data generated, a Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials of seleno-L- methionine in sequential combination with axitinib are under clinical evaluation in patients with advanced clear cell renal cell carcinoma.

Dr. Yan graduated in 2001 in Physical Chemistry from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), and now is a full professor of USTC. His research focuses on carbon materials for energy conversion and storage, biomass conversion and green chemistry, and biomaterials and biomedicine based on polymers. Dr. Yan has published over 160 papers and edited three books.
